Minnesota is known for its long and frigid winters. Getting outdoors during the winter is a sure way to beat the winter blues and keep your adventures going. The key to getting outdoors safely is proper layering. With a baby, there are simply some extra steps we need to take in order to ensure little ones are warm in those cool winter temperatures. If you listened to Hiking Thru Life’s podcast episode #40 with Linda McGurk you know There’s No Such Thing As Bad Weather. Scandinavian countries get children outside no matter what. They even let their babies sleep outside! Per the cover photo, I think Rory would like to adopt that tradition too!
We want to make sure Rory is snug and warm on our winter adventures this year so we are trying out Ella’s Wool. The company was founded by Ella’s mother Becca, who is from Oslo, Norway. Much like Linda McGurk, she was saddened by the bare outdoor playgrounds in the winter here in the United States compared to Scandinavian countries. Soon other parents noticed how different Ella was dressed for outdoor play and this was the start of Ella’s Wool! We got a few different products from the company and so far they have no let us down! We have wool products for ourselves so it was important to do the same for our baby. It’s even more important to keep baby warm because those little ones cannot regulate their body temperatures like adults can.
The tube knit leggings are made of very warm wool making them perfect for layering. Rory is a tall baby (he’s wearing 3-6 month clothes already and he’s just shy of 2 months) and I even had to roll up the tubes on the bottom because they were so long. I am totally ok with that. It means they have plenty of growing room! I love that I can put the tubes over a base layer and put him in the car seat. Tubes are a safe alternative to keep your babies warm and safe in a car seat. Make sure you read up on car seat safety before bundling your munchkins up for a drive this winter. Depending on where you live in the winter there may be no need for an extra layer once you get to the trailhead! Here in Minnesota, we know it’s always a good plan to have extra layers on hand!
The Baby Base Layer Set is exactly what your baby needs to give the peace of mind that your baby will be warm and dry. Although we have no reached those frigid temperatures this season, we know they are on the way. The base layers have been perfect for these chilly in-between season days. On warmer days the base layers and a sweatshirt is all I’ve put on Rory to head outside and he’s been plenty warm. I laid him on the ground where it was damp but he stayed warm and dry in the moisture-wicking wool. This will be the perfect base layer under all the winter gear when we head out on cold winter days. The wool hat is ideal to keep babies’ head warm and dry too. I wish we would have had this hat on his first camping trip! The wool is odor-resistant so no need to wash as often which means more time for winter adventuring!
Rory had his first snowfall in October but it was not here for very long. The freshly fallen snow and a baby make for the most peaceful winter hike. What are you most excited about for the winter? Be sure to follow the below guide from Ella’s Wool for dressing your baby this winter!
